English language: Clarity of Diction

This course gives the learner the ability to speak with clarity and to take control of the way they present themselves when speaking. The tutor guides the learner through listening and speaking exercises which develop accuracy in understanding the power of speech and how to engage an audience.

Course Content

Module I - The Power of the Spoken Word

 - Examples of how the spoken word can inspire and motivate

-  Analysis of some examples of powerful speeches and storytelling

Module 2 - Engage the Audience

 - Authentic voice

 - Making a connection

 - Content

Module 3 - Voice control

 - Rhythm of speech

 - Speed, volume and pace

 - Voice projection

Module 4 - Emphasis, intonation and enunciation

 - The correct use of stress to add emphasis

 - The use of intonation and rhythm

 - Clarity of enunciation

Module 5 - 21st Century Oratory Skills

 - Practice of the pause to emphasise the message

 - Body language and gesture to enhance engagement

 - Opening and closing - the speaker is in control

Pre-course needs analysis

A pre-course Zoom meeting between the tutor and the student for level assessment and needs analysis.

Recommended reading

Before the start of the course, the student is sent an assignment to be completed before the course and a short reading list.

Course aims

This course aims to provide the student with the ability to take control of the way they interact with others.

Teaching methods

- Introductory section, outlining key areas of work within each module.
- Description of required reading and recommended reading.
- Presentation of materials taken from additional (eg. online) relevant sources.
- Daily homework assignments.
- Tutor feedback to homework.
- Assessment and feedback.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this courses, students are expected to be able to:
● Enjoy the opportunity to give a talk or presentation
● Communicate ideas or projects with clarity
● Regulate the tone, volume, pace of their speaking as required
● Deliver a talk with clarity and warmth

Assessment methods

Students are set two pieces of work. The first is due halfway through the course. This does not count towards the final outcome but preparing for it helps the student to prepare for the assessed piece of work at the

Each lesson is live and taught by a tutor via Zoom
Each lesson is of 60 minutes duration
Lessons can be taken at any time from Monday - Saturday 09.00 to 18.00 GMT


IT Requirements

This course is delivered online; to participate you must be familiar with using a computer for purposes such as sending email and searching the internet. You will also need regular access to the internet and a computer which meets the recommended  minimum computer specification.
